Getting your IPTA-CPT in 3 steps

1. Apply: submit your application. An IPTA team member reviews it within 48 hours.
2. Schedule your exam: book your exam date once your approval email arrives.
3. Prepare for exam day (you are here): check what you need to test online or at a test center.

You can take the IPTA CPT exam online with a live remote proctor or in person at a testing center. If you’re testing online, run the system check as soon as you schedule, not on exam day.

How the testing systems fit together

You’ll see three names during the process. They work together, and each handles a different step.

Before exam day: run the system check (online exams)

This is required. Do it right after you schedule, so there’s time to fix any problems.

2. Run the system check, then download and install the ProProctor app at rpcandidate.prometric.com.

Online exam checklist

1. Save your admission letter. It has the passcode and surname you’ll use to launch the exam. The passcode can’t be changed, and it’s not the same as your smttest.com login.
2. Use your own desktop or laptop with a webcam. Phones and tablets won’t work. Don’t use a work or company computer, since its security software often blocks the exam app.
3. Use Google Chrome. No other browser will work. Install Chrome before you install the ProProctor app.
4. Have your ID ready. You’ll need an original, unexpired, government-issued ID with your photo and signature. The name on it must match the name on your application.
5. Sign in 15 minutes early to complete the readiness check. Don’t refresh the page while you wait for the check or the proctor, or you’ll be sent to the back of the line.
6. Expect to wait for a proctor. It can take up to 45 minutes to be assigned one. Don’t sign out or close the testing browser while you wait.
7. Stay in view of your camera. The proctor watches you for the whole exam, and leaving the camera view isn’t allowed.

Your testing room (online exams)

• Test indoors, in a quiet, well-lit room with four walls and a closed door.
• No one else can be in the room or come in during the exam. If someone does, your exam may be ended or your results invalidated.
• Clear your desk and the area around it. Cover any other screens in the room; a sheet or blanket works.
• Before you start, the proctor will ask you to show your desk and room on camera.

In-person testing center

• Bring your ID and your scheduling receipt. Without both, you won’t be able to take the exam. Your ID must be an original, unexpired, government-issued ID with your photo and signature.
• Arrive early. You have 180 minutes for the exam, and checking in late can cut into that time.

What you can have during the exam

• A simple, non-programmable calculator
• One or two sheets of blank paper and one or two pens or pencils
• Online only: one clear container of plain water with all labels removed (a lid, if it has one, must be clear too), and two tissues, which the proctor checks before you start

Everything else, including phones, watches, notes, bags and food, must be out of reach while you test.

Retaking the exam

If you don’t pass, you can retake the CPT exam 90 days after your previous attempt. The CPT uses a single exam form, so NCCA accreditation standards require this wait between attempts.
